ANNOUNCEMENTS

PROGRAMS:
This week, we wrap up our "Turning To" series with a discussion on turning to prayer led by Jason Cox.

TREASURER:
Don't forget that this Sunday ends our official class dues pledge period!  We've heard from 22 couples, but we'd love to hear from a few more before finalizing a budget for the coming year.  Look for blank pledge cards in the attendance folder on Sunday.  Thank you to everyone so far for your generous pledges for next year!

OUTREACH:

We will be asking each couple to write two letters to the orphans in Georgia (see below for instructions).  They will be your ticket to the Halloween party!  If your last name starts with A - M, please write to Shalva Amaglobeli (7 year old boy; wants to be a policeman).  If your last name starts with N-Z, please write to Mery Moichadze (6 year old girl; wants to be a doctor).  For the second letter, please write something generic - there are several orphans who do not have a sponsor and these will be distributed to them.  Please keep the letter upbeat and positive, but do not make any false promises (eg, we'd love you to visit us in America).  It is ok to say things like "we love you" and "we are praying for you.". We will be distributing stationary in class over the next few Sundays, but you are welcome to use your own.

SOCIAL:
We are very excited for everyone to join us for the Halloween Party this upcoming Sunday…it should be a boo-tiful day J.  Please don’t forget to bring a pumpkin and carving knife/kit for the adult pumpkin carving contest.  There will be a fun prize for the winner!  We will have plenty of family activities including a children’s costume parade and spooky crafts.  Costumes are encouraged and we ask that everyone bring a Halloween inspired snack.

Our social event in November will be centered around Thanksgiving therefore we will be partnering with Outreach for a volunteer project and a fellowship dinner.  More details to come.

Please save the date for the LAF Christmas Party to be held on Saturday, December 10th at the home of Kevin and Jo Hodges.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Blessings,

Malia, David, Susan and Wes

Weekly Announcements

DEVOTIONAL

Unnamed grace

In the years I lived farther north, I loved this time of year, with the vibrant colors of changing leaves. Others would ask me about the species of trees, but I had no idea which tree was which. I knew only that I was seeing something beautiful.

Often in human life, we see something which speaks to us, though we cannot identify that "something" by name. I believe that most of those experiences involve a glimpse of God, of the divine at work among or within the human. Many people who turn away from religion find experiences of great depth and joy, and in those experiences, they see God but do not name the experience as related to God.

Jesus' critics attacked him when he cured a man on the Sabbath, but he maintained that the love of God far outreaches religion. He said that "something greater than the temple is here," saying of God, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice."

The powerful experiences and encounters we have in everyday life are God incarnate. We who seek God may not stop to recognize God in those circumstances. Others may not identify those experiences with God at all.

They only know that they have just seen something beautiful.

Psalm 38; Lamentations 2:8-15; 1 Corinthians 15:51-58

PROGRAMS:
Join us this Sunday as the Easom's will be teaching this week on "Turning to the Bible".  This will be an interactive discussion and they are asking everyone to please bring a bible with them this Sunday to use for reference in our lesson.  If you have extra bibles at home that you are not currently using, prayerfully consider donating your extra Bibles to our class.  Anyone who donates a Bible will be able to share the story about their Bibles origin.  Thanks in advance for participating and please note that there is an open invitation to donate Bibles.

OUTREACH:

SOCIAL:
Please mark your calendars for a Halloween costume party at the Kelly's home on Sunday, October 30th at 4:00 pm.  Bring the whole family as we will have a pumpkin carving contest for the adults and a pumpkin decorating station for the children.  If you did not receive the EVITE please let Natalia or Elizabeth know.

TREASURER:
This year we are trying something new!  We will be collecting "pledge cards" from each LAF couple during October so that the officers can set a realistic budget for our year.  In past years, we've had a significant surplus of funds, but we're beginning to whittle it down. We are suggesting a pledge of $100 per couple but are leaving it up to each couple for a final decision.  Look for pledge cards and a collection envelope in the weekly attendance folder.  We hope to collect all dues by December 31st and will be tracking our progress with a fancy fundraising thermometer on the bulletin board.  Please note that we will accept them after  December 31st, but we are encouraging everyone to get them in by this date.

FROM MEG:
Also, don't forget that this Friday, a group of us will be meeting up at Grady Stadium in midtown to watch Lanny's team, the Blessed Trinity Titans take on Therrell High.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend! The game starts at 5:30 and should be finished by 7:30.  After the game, we'll go over to Mellow Mushroom on Monroe for dinner.  Please e-mail Meg at mthomablackwood@gmail.com to let her know if you can join the group, so that we can make plans to meet up outside the stadium before the game.  If you can't make the game, please join us for dinner.  The Titans won their game last week against the Lovett lions in exciting form (a 48 yrd field goal with less than a minute left), so they are now #1 on their side of the region.  Be sure to wear your green and gold to cheer on the Titans!

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Blessings,

Malia, David, Susan & Wes

Weekly Announcements

DEVOTIONAL:
Allies and enemies
Psalm 18:1-20: [My enemies] confronted me in the day of my disaster; but the LORD... rescued me because he delighted in me.

On this date in 1943, Italy declared war on Germany. Earlier in the conflict, the two despotic regimes had been partners in the Axis.

We shouldn't be surprised when former allies become enemies. We live our lives in a space where human beings and systems manipulate one another for their own purposes, turning against one another when those purposes are satisfied or frustrated.

The manipulative nature of much of human interaction explains the difficulty we have in understanding the unconditional love of God. The love of God transforms because God needs nothing from me in return. God "rescued me because he delighted in me," so I need not worry what will happen when God no longer needs me.

Pure, non-manipulative love can also transform human relationships. But offering grace to others requires work and persistence; human nature has been trained to ask, "What's the catch?" Human nature half-expects today's ally to become tomorrow's enemy, or at least tomorrow's competitor.

When someone offers me a gift of pure grace, I can be suspicious and wonder when that ally will become an enemy. Or I can practice remembering that unconditional love cannot be taken away; it is a gift from God.

And God rescued me simply because God delighted in me.

Weekly Announcements

DEVOTIONAL:

2 Kings 23:4-25: Before [Josiah] there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might...

Winston Churchill, writing about the time before World War II, spoke of a leader so caught up in the Communist Party that he was the "perfect agent of Soviet policy." In one moment, though, Churchill saw through the man's façade; he said of that moment, "Inside the image there appeared the man."

Many of us spend a great deal of time tending to a façade, offering the image we think will play most favorably with others. We exhaust ourselves, fearful of letting the true human being show through that image.

King Josiah overcame the need to follow trends or expectations; he reformed his culture, turning his people back toward God. He eliminated popular idols and worship places, and insisted on worshiping the one true God. He truly "turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might." His life guided by one true direction, Josiah let go of the need to juggle images to meet others' expectations.

In our own time, we are called to live as Jesus lived: with compassion, with faithfulness, with love for others. When we stop juggling all of our public images, we can rest, choosing one true God instead of many small, ineffectual gods. We can find peace by living as God calls us to live.

And inside the person there appears the Image.

PROGRAMS:

This week, we'll begin a three part series entitled "Turning To," which focuses on seeking God's guidance.  Over the course of these three lessons, we'll look at turning to prayer, turning to the Bible and turning to Christian council and how each one of those different pathways can help us know and understand God's plan for us, especially in times of difficulty.   The series will be facilitated by the Easoms, Coxes and Beakleys.  Here is a schedule of lessons and teachers for the next few weeks:

October 9th--Beakley teaching on Turning to Christian Council
October 16th--Fess/Spencer teaching on the Honduras Mission Trip
October 23rd--Easoms teaching our second lesson in the "Turning to" series
October 30th--Coxes, teaching our third and final lesson in the "Turning to" series.

FROM MEG BLACKWOOD:

Are you ready for some football?  For the past several years, many of you have been kind enough to come out and support Lanny's team, The Blessed Trinity Titans, at one of their football games.  This year, I would love for you to join Land and me as the Titans take on the Lovett Lions on Friday, October 14th at The Lovett School (which, for those of you who aren't familiar with Atlanta, is in the Vinings/Buckhead area of town, off Paces Ferry Rd).  Game time is 7:30, but Land and I would like to invite everyone to join us for a potluck tailgate party beginning at 5:45/6.   We'll bring a Chick Fil-A nugget tray and cookies to share with you all.  Please bring your own beverages (glass bottles and alcohol are not allowed) and a snack to share.  If you can join us, please let me know (RSVP to mthomablackwood@gmail.com by October 13th), so that I can send you directions.  Unfortunately, I can't offer you free admission to the game, but I can offer you a really fun night of high school football.  This is a big game for BT, because if they win, they will most likely be going to the play-offs!  Wear your green and gold to help us cheer on the Titans!
