LAF Weekly Announcements

In God's Grace,
Susan, Wes, Maila & David

DEVOTIONAL:
Following our discussion last week on exposing our children to the Lord's Prayer, I thought this was a fitting testament...
Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.  Hebrews 13:7
MY mother was a person of extraordinary faith. If I were to list all the lessons my mother taught me, the list would fill many pages. However, teaching me to pray the Lord's Prayer daily and to read the scriptures were simple yet profound ways to plant the first seeds that brought me closer to God. I am grateful that through the spiritual discipline she taught me, I learned to love and follow Christ.
I wonder how many children today are taught the important lessons of praying and reading the scripture. Today many children seem to learn how to use the computer and to play video games before they learn how to speak to God.
Child rearing isn't easy. We can show our gratitude for the people -- often our parents -- who have been our models of faith by living a life of prayer grounded in scripture. Praying and reading God's word are powerful tools that serve us not only in childhood but throughout our lives. And they are a legacy we are called to pass on to others.
CURRICULUM:
This week we will have a Georgia Orphanage Update and make cards to send to the orphans led by the Spencer, Greateauxs, and Wades.  Please bring any extra stationary that you may have to write letters to the orphans.  The Borowskys will be bringing our snacks this week.  Thank you to our class leaders in advance!
LAF LADIES:
The Women’s Lecture Series will host an evening with Becca Stevens next week on Monday, October 3rd at 6:00pm entitled "Wives Tales and Snake Oil:Traditions and Stories of Healing."  We'll eat a dinner together as Becca shares her understanding of how love heals.  We will hear the women of the Magdalene Program describe their lives before finding a safe, loving home and a rewarding job at Thistle Farms.  Afterwards, there will be a Q&A session and a book signing.  Register is now open on the church website; childcare is not available.
OUTREACH:
This month we will be raising money to support the Georgia orphanage where we sponsor two orphans.  They are in desperate need of money to buy shoes for the children and have asked our class to donate $300. Our class has already raised $42.00 through the raffle held at the Tailgate party.  To raise the remaining money, we will be organizing a consignment drive.  Rhubarb and Custard had agreed to give us %50 percent of the proceeds rather that the usual %40!  Please e-mail Elizabeth Wade if you have any maternity or children's clothes you would like to consign.  On October 1, we will have a speaker talk to us about the mission work at the orphanage and we will write letters to the children.

SOCIAL:
Please mark your calendars for a Halloween costume party at the Kelly's home on Sunday, October 30th at 4:00 pm.  Bring the whole family as we will have a pumpkin carving contest for the adults and a pumpkin decorating station for the children.  If you did not receive the EVITE please let Natalia or Elizabeth know.

Do you love to decorate for the holidays?  Want to showcase your house for Christmas?  Well, then hosting the Christmas party is the perfect answer!  We are still looking for volunteers to host the party on Saturday, December 10th.  Please contact Natalia or Elizabeth if you are interested in hosting this special event.
